Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
Which types of projects does Conductor support?
Conductor supports a wide array of commercial and community solar projects - any offtaker type, most common mounting solutions, any geography in the US, and anything under utility scale in terms of size. Whether you’ve got a 25kW behind the meter rooftop array going on a library in Arizona or a 5MW ground mount on a farm in New York with community solar offtake, we have investors interested and eager to talk with you!
Which clean energy technologies does Conductor’s marketplace support?
Investors on Conductor are primarily interested in solar PV projects with and without battery storage. This includes rooftop, fixed and tracking ground mounts, carports, and sometimes more than one mounting type on the same site.
Which size of project does Conductor support?
Conductor focuses on mid-market solar, which encompasses a wide range of commercial and community solar projects. Our smallest project to date was 11kW and our largest project was 7.5MW, but most projects fall between 50kW and 5MW. A lot of developers are pleased to find out that they can arrange PPA financing through Conductor for individual projects smaller than 500kW.
How does Conductor work?
Conductor helps developers price projects automatically, get bids from multiple investors, and streamlines the process of completing the transaction with the investor they choose.
We match projects with up to five investors to help ensure a good fit. Once a project is matched, the investors ask questions to help inform their pricing and submit bids. The developer can respond to those questions, negotiate, and ultimately accept the bid that works best for them.
Once the developer has accepted a bid, they will sign a Letter of intent with the investor. The investor then opens up a data room on Conductor to allow for the easy sharing of project-related documentation and confirmation of diligence completions.
Does Conductor support community solar?
Yes! We’ve seen a growing number of community solar projects in the app, and we support these projects. One of the more complex aspects of community solar is the ever-shifting patchwork of state and local regulations that come into play. We regularly update our in-app guidance as these regulations evolve..
How does Conductor make money?
Conductor Solar is free for developers. We charge a flat fee to investors, half when their bid is accepted and half when the project goes live. The fee is less than what investors commonly pay when working with brokers.
Managing Your Projects
How accurate is autopricing?
The Conductor Solar team has supported hundreds of mid-market solar deals across the US, and that number continues to grow. As a result, we have detailed insight into project pricing and execution requirements in all regions of the country, at all sizes, and with all types of offtakers and equipment, and we use this information to feed a sophisticated pricing model to estimate either project value or offtake rate.
Investor bids generally fall within our estimated range, and we are constantly fine-tuning the model to incorporate new data, so its accuracy continues to improve.
Can I use autopricing more than once on the same project?
Yes! Go crazy. There is no limit on the number of scenarios that you can run with this tool. Change the term and the escalator on the PPA. Change the production with a new layout or system size. Open up your browser and show your customer in real time what they can expect with third party ownership. It’s all good. We want this tool to accelerate sales and project development, as well as anticipate investor pricing in our marketplace. Any time project details change, you can re-run the autopricing and update the results.
When should I make a portfolio with multiple projects?
Portfolios are a great way to link related projects together to get better pricing. This allows investors to take advantage of economies of scale and price more aggressively on the whole portfolio than they would on each individual project.
For example, if you are building multiple rooftop installations on a college campus, we recommend putting those projects into a portfolio.
Generally speaking, if there are multiple installations all built for the same offtaker at the same time, those projects will likely fit will in a portfolio and see better pricing as a result.
Solar Developers
I’m a Developer - Why should I use Conductor?
Developers use Conductor to get financing for projects of all types and to make sure they’re getting a good deal with their investors. If a certain type of project has been difficult to finance in the past, we can probably help. We make it easy to get multiple bids in one place, so that you can compare investors’ pricing and move forward with confidence. Conductor also helps developers and investors save a lot of time and money in the deal process through higher efficiencies and higher conversions. We help deals move forward faster and with higher close rates, which benefits everyone. For developers, this contributes to faster revenue growth with more deals getting done and higher margins with better pricing on those deals.
What happens when I submit my project?
When you submit your project, Conductor uses a sophisticated algorithm to match it with potential investors that are a good fit. The matching is based on a number of factors, including location, size, offtaker type, and more. Investors get notified that they have a new project to bid on, which prompts them to review your project information and submit a bid. Once bids start coming in, you can review and compare them. The Conductor team is available to support this process and add insight about investors’ common processes and practices. Pricing is important, but it is only one factor among many to consider.
What happens after I accept a bid from an investor?
After you’ve accepted a bid, the investor will get notified and they’ll work with you to sign a Letter of Intent. Once that’s done, the investor opens up a data room where you can upload project documentation and conduct diligence.
Solar Investors
I’m an Investor - Why should I use Conductor?
Conductor brings you pre-screened projects targeted to your investment criteria at the moment developers are interested in arranging financing. It’s the closest thing to automatic origination. Yes, there are other investors bidding in the app, but that’s no different than the rest of the market. Conductor just accelerates the process and saves you a ton of time and money.
We make sure that the projects you see in Conductor are economically viable for the type of financing that you provide. We use your preferences to filter projects algorithmically and review the matches to ensure a good fit. We help you get the information that you need to price projects accurately. And once you’re selected for a project, we support you and the developer all the way through to closing.
We even help your team on deals that you don’t win. We’re happy to provide feedback on your bids and explain why a developer made a different decision. This is one of the aspects of Conductor that regularly delights investors - to our surprise. Our marketplace provides unique market insight specific to you, which is very difficult to find.
I’m an Investor - What kinds of projects can I expect to see?
On Conductor, you can expect to see projects with strong economics that are a great fit for your investments. We pre-screen projects for economic viability and match them with your preferences. We can say this confidently because almost every match in our marketplace receives a bid on the platform.
So let us know if you’re interested in small behind-the-meter projects across the country, multi-megawatt community solar projects in a few select states, a particular type of offtake, or all of the above. We’ll send you the projects that you want to see and make sure you’re not wasting time looking at deals that aren’t a good fit.
