Origins of The Great Inversion

Written by Conductor Solar

Why is a deal team writing a policy brief?

Fair question. Our day job is narrower than this. We help developers and investors price, fund, and close deals for grid-tied solar and battery systems. We have more than $2 billion of transaction experience and live pricing data across more than a gigawatt of projects. We sit between the projects and the money.

That seat shows us something most policy shops never see: how a rule lands on every party to a deal, and whether a project governed by it can actually be financed and built.

What we kept running into

Every company we work with is doing its best inside the existing rules. So are the utilities. The people following the rules are not the problem. The rules are.

The same barrier shows up everywhere: in our deals, in the trade press, on the podcasts, and at the ballot box where electricity bills have become a first-tier political issue. The problem is familiar. What we could not find was a complete answer: what should replace those old rules. So we wrote it down.

A new term sheet

Policy is dealmaking at grand scale. The Great Inversion is a term sheet for a better agreement with the grid based on fairness, financeability, shared intelligence, and other key principles that drive our deals.

Our interest, on the table

Yes, we benefit if this works. Reforms that clear the queue expand the market we operate in. But so do households, businesses, energy producers, and energy consumers large and small. The coalition for this is broader, better resourced, and more aligned than ever before.

What a small team can do

We did not invent these ideas. What was missing was assembly: someone to put the pieces into an offer stress tested against every party at the table. That is the work deal teams do. Nobody expects a think tank to draft a term sheet.

The invitation

If you like this offer, make it yours: file the docket language, hand the brief to your commission, send the toolkit to whoever runs energy in your governor's office. If you think we have it wrong, tell us. The best way to improve a term sheet is a counterparty marking it up.
